Career vs Job: following your passion

In case you are wondering what the difference between a career and a job is; I would answer with just one word; “Attitude”. If we refer to a more formal definition, a career means an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress while a job means a task or piece of work, especially one that is paid. In simpler terms, a career is passion driven and a job is stability driven.

What makes a career different from a job?

When it comes to the word “Passion”, it causes a significant difference in one’s professional life. If we ask someone why they are doing a job, no doubt that the most common answer would be to earn money as the majority of people start a job with the major intention of building a financial path for their future needs and wants. But if we ask the same question from someone who is following their passion, the answer would be completely different. According to world statistics, over half of the full-time employed people are currently looking for new jobs which indicates low job satisfaction rates. Maybe it is the right time to question yourself whether you are really happy with what you are doing.

A job however has its perks such as a good paycheck, stable income, and low risk but the costs of achieving these would be ‘freedom’ and ‘inner calling’. On the contrary, a career simply allows you to follow your passion which would be another phrase for following your heart, which would result in achieving things that cost you in your jobs such as inner joy and fulfillment.

How does the right choice impact your life?

As per the statistics, 33% of our life is spent on doing our ‘work’ and the remaining 2/3 of our life builds around our family and social and financial status. It is up to you whether to spend this significant amount of time on something you do not enjoy or whether to actually follow what you love. Because the ultimate result would affect not just your peace of mind but of others around you. However, a fact that must be realized is that following your passion would never be like walking on a road full of petals. It will surely be a rollercoaster with a lot of ups and downs and challenges.

Which to choose?

This is solely in your hand. No matter what choice you make, you should be able to fulfill both your financial and spiritual desires because both choices will need a lot of hard work and dedication. Be wise. Maybe you will find both in one place.

How to choose?

Follow the ‘inner calling!’. Even though it is easier said than done, you can always make a plan. Step out of your comfort zone and try things out. Discover your hidden skills. Find out what you are good at. Sometimes those might surprise you as never before. You can always take slow steps. Remember that you are never too late to do incredible things. All you need is a good understanding of what you are doing and your decisions.

And then?

Once you have discovered your passion, you have to take the responsibility of implementing it. Some careers are easier to begin while some require a lot of dedication and commitment. You will need to work on the financial aspects of your journey. But do remember that money cannot buy happiness. Have a clear vision and a mind. They are essential in making your dream career a success.

Something to add.

As Sri Lankans, we are always advised to go with the flow and stick to the rules. From kindergarten to college, the society around us has a significant impact on our decisions. Whenever you try to step out of your comfort zone, no doubt you will be criticized at least once. But remember, your parents’ jobs should not always be your job. Your college program of choice will not always be your career choice. What society labels as the best is not always the best. There were plenty of people who had proved this in history. You are never too late for anything.

Live a life of passion! Happiness, joy, and fulfillment will knock at your doors ultimately.
