Turtle's Trails

The Rotaract Club of University of Colombo School of Computing recently organized a turtle conservation program called "Turtle’s Trails" at the Induruwa Sea Turtle Conservation Center on the 4th of March, 2023. This project was conducted under the community services avenue for the first time. The program's goal was to create a safe and healthy environment for those amazing sea creatures, thrive, and support ongoing turtle conservation efforts.

We reached the destination at around 7:30 AM. There were several kinds of turtles, and we were privileged to witness turtles laying their eggs. We even helped to take out baby turtles from the ground, a heart-warming experience that will stay with us for a long time.

We treated the injured turtles and diligently cleaned their tanks, ensuring they were comfortable and hygienic. Furthermore, we handed over the donations of equipment and funds collected during a week-long campaign at UCSC premises. We aimed to support the continued conservation efforts undertaken in the area. We hope our contribution will make a meaningful impact in preserving the turtle population and their habitat.

The success of the "Turtle's Trails" conservation program was due to the unwavering support and dedication of several individuals who played pivotal roles in our organization. The community service avenue directors of the Rotaract Club of UCSC, namely Rtr. Kivi Amarakoon and Rtr. Rashmi Gunawardana, along with the club president Rtr. Lavinka Weerasekara, were the main supporting pillars behind this initiative. Their leadership, vision, and tireless efforts drove the project forward and ensured its success.

The organizing committee, led by Rtr. Nirupama Dissanayaka, as the Project chair, worked with utmost enthusiasm, hard work, and dedication to bring the project to fruition. Their meticulous planning, coordination, and execution skills were evident throughout the project, and their unwavering commitment to its success was commendable.

The Rotaract Club of UCSC would also like to express its sincere gratitude to all the volunteers who wholeheartedly participated in the "Turtle's Trails" conservation program. Their selfless contributions, time, and effort were invaluable in making the project successful. Their dedication and passion for environmental conservation were truly commendable, and their active involvement in the project made a significant difference in the efforts to protect and preserve the endangered turtles and their habitats.

The "Turtle’s Trails" program was a great success and helped to encourage people both within and outside the club to volunteer work. Being a part of this project was a fantastic opportunity to truly make a difference in the health and happiness of some threatened species in the ocean. As an essential part of our ecosystem, by supporting turtle conservation efforts, we are helping to protect the sea and the environment.

The impact of the project goes beyond the immediate benefit to the turtles. As the Rotaractors learned, conservation efforts help preserve the ocean's delicate ecosystem and support the communities that depend on it. We are thrilled to be able to contribute to these efforts and make a positive impact.

The sense of fulfillment, valuable experiences, and joy from the "Turtle's Trails" conservation program are priceless rewards for the Rotaract Club of  UCSC. These outcomes are a significant part of our journey in serving the community, motivating us to continue their efforts with passion and dedication. The program exemplifies how young people can come together and make a meaningful difference in their community, inspiring future endeavors.
