ZERO WASTE
"Zero Waste" is a zoo cleanup project conducted by the Environmental Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of UCSC on 16th of September 2023, at Dehiwala Zoological Gardens.
The primary aim of the project was to create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment for both the animal residents and visitors at Dehiwala Zoological Gardens, while fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship.

Why Dehiwala Zoological Gardens?
Dehiwala Zoological Gardens is not just a place to admire incredible wildlife; it's also a home for many endangered species. Unfortunately, due to the challenges that all Sri Lankans are currently facing, this precious place is struggling to stay on track, and as responsible Rotaractors, we believe that it is our duty to assist in its preservation. By cleaning up the zoo's premises, we believe that we made a positive impact on the habitat and well-being of its animal residents.

Proper pre - preparation was essential for a smooth cleanup process. We established clear objectives, brought together a committed team, secured the required permits, and purchased essential supplies, including gloves, protective equipment, and trash bags.
Campaigns, security measures, waste disposal techniques, volunteer training, and a comprehensive schedule were all part of our preparation. The key to a successful and well-organized cleanup was this thoughtful planning.

Blessed with perfect weather on the cleanup day, our committed team of twenty Rotaractors tirelessly worked on the areas designated by the zoo staff. Despite the fact that we did not have the opportunity to clean the entire zoo, our enthusiasm and dedication shone through as we transformed the designated areas into clean and appealing places.
Our cleanup project received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Zoo staff expressed their gratitude for the evident enhancements throughout the zoo. The positive reactions from the local community underline the vital role of community support in sustaining conservation efforts over time. These responses provide evidence of the collaborative spirit required to protect our environment and cherished institutions like the zoo.

The Dehiwala Zoo cleanup project was a powerful testament to the impact that unity and collaboration can have on a community and its environment. It was a reminder that small actions can lead to significant, lasting change.
Working together, we can create a cleaner, more sustainable future for our community and future generations. This is a testament to the strength of our collective efforts, showing that we have the power to make a positive impact on our world, one step at a time.
